For my final university project, I teamed up with 2 other designers to create our own directed project. We ended up creating Makit; a DIY clothing printing kit promoting hobby culture and self expression. I was Creative Director and Lead to this project, which was a challenging, but rewarding task. I took on most creative direction, and made many crucial decisions to ultimately create a project I was super proud of. We ended up getting great marks on this project, and it taught me many skills about leadership and taking initiative, as well as refreshing many of my design skills and refining my professional skills before I graduate.
Collaborators in this project: Caitlin O'Connell and Jacob Atta
Makit started out as my own idea for a DIY clothing printing kit. It spiraled into a group project spanning over multiple months, with dozens of assets and deliverables by the end, including social media, website, guides, stuleguides, and a full physical kit.
After the initial ideas process, Makit started as a branding process. Working as the lead designer with my two other designers Caitlin O'Connel and Jacob Atta, as we worked through how the brand was going to look. We also researched competitors, inspiration, and started on some initial stencil designs, which would be a process we would continue throughout the project.
Once we had a cohesive brand, we started designing packaging, and thinking about dimensions and budget. This was a tough process, but eventually we decided to get basic packaging and make the insides ourselves. Throughout this process, we were also doing a number of physical tests with stencils and clothing, to understand if the project would work. These tests were a success.
After we had a lot of the physical kit done, we started doing photography for the kit and our clothing we could use for marketing and the website. This was a fun process as i was a break from the constant motor we had going for our design.
The final stretch involved some poster and social media design, as well as me designing a few web pages that would double as our presentation at our Major Project Showcase.
Overall, this process was a really long and rewarding experience. Working within a team was really fitting, and I had fun directing my fellow designers on style, creative direction, and orginisation. Big props to Caitlin and Jacob for their contributions.
